You are currently viewing Advent Devotion: Mighty Warrior

As we celebrate Advent, we are reminded that we have a Savior who was willing to enter into our world and who came to our rescue as the long awaited Messiah. We want to live in light of His first coming and wait in hopeful expectation that He is coming again.

Each Sunday we’ll focus on the lectionary passage for that week and look at what it reveals about the Messiah:

  • Righteous Savior (Jeremiah 33:14-16)
  • Purifier/Refiner (Malachi 3:1-4)
  • Mighty Warrior (Zephaniah 3:14-20)
  • Shepherd/Peace (Micah 5:2-5)

As we focus on who Jesus is as our Messiah we’ll be sending out and posting something each week to help us engage in these ways:

  • MONDAYS: Revelation– how is Jesus being revealed as the Messiah?
  • WEDNESDAYS: Reverence– take time to worship Him for who He is.
  • FRIDAYS: Response – how do we live in response?

 

WEEK THREE: MIGHTY WARRIOR

MONDAY: REVELATION- how is Jesus being revealed as the Mighty Warrior?

Read:

  • Zephaniah 3:14-20
  • Psalm 18:1-19
  • Daniel 7:13-14
  • Revelation 19:11-16

Reflect:

  • Reflect on Jesus as a Mighty Warrior
    • He is a warrior who is faithful, true, and just
    • He came to defeat sin and death and to establish His Kingdom of righteousness
    • He conquers our enemies of sin and death because of His delight in us
    • He is a mighty warrior who was willing to lay down His life for His people
    • His rule and reign will last forever – He cannot be defeated
    • In the gospels we see hearts healed, bodies restored, and natural forces submit under Jesus as the earth’s rightful King – When He comes again to judge as a mighty warrior and reign fully, we will see all sin, injustice, and death defeated forever as His Kingdom of light, life, and righteousness is established on the whole earth
  • Take a moment to meditate on Zephaniah 3:15&17: “The Lord has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm. The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
  • How have you seen Jesus fight against sin or our broken world in your own life?

Pray:

Jesus, thank you for fighting against sin and death to rescue me. I worship you as a mighty warrior who cannot be defeated. In the midst of our broken world, help me to have confidence in Your power and to live in hope for the day when you return to defeat sin and death once and for all. As I wait for your kingdom to come fully on the earth, help me to cooperate with the work you are doing to fight sin and death in my own life. Let your kingdom of righteousness come more and more fully into my heart.

 

WEDNESDAY: REVERENCE– take time to worship Him for who He is.

FRIDAY: RESPONSE – how do we live in response to Jesus as our Mighty Warrior?

  • Read:
    • Ephesian 6:10-18
    • Zephaniah 3:14-17
  • Reflect:
    • In Ephesians, Paul tells us to put on the armor of God – to be strong in the Lord’s power and to stand firm and pray.
    • Is there an area in your life where you need the Lord to fight for you? Because Jesus is fighting for us as our mighty warrior, we don’t have to fight for ourselves. What does it look like for you to trust in His power and to stand firm and pray?
    • In Zephaniah, God’s people are told to sing, to shout aloud, to be glad, and to rejoice with all their hearts. Zephanaiah tells them not to be afraid and not to let their hands hang limp. As people who belong to the mighty warrior, we can live in hope and joy rather than defeat or fear. Take time today to praise Jesus as the mighty warrior who saves and ask Him to help you live with hope in any area where you may be feeling afraid or defeated.
  • Pray:
    • Jesus, thank you for fighting for me so that I can live in hope. I praise you for the ways you are fighting against sin and death in my heart and our world. In times where I feel afraid or defeated, help me to stand firm in you and to trust you as a mighty warrior who saves. Help me to live in hope for the day when you defeat sin and darkness once and for all and the earth is restored to wholeness and righteousness under your reign forever.
